The town of Fish is located on the top (and along the western side) of an impressive karst cliff, rising to more than 100 meters on the Adriatic, overlooking the bay below. The historic core of the country climbs from the harbor to the fortifications of the Swabian castle.

The municipality, between the towns of Vico del Gargano Vieste, presents an excursion difference of 582m and orography harsh and varied. Peschici is 9 km from San Menaio (SS89), 13 km from Vico del Gargano (SS89), 14 km from Rhodes Garganico, 21 km from Vieste (SS89 or SP23) and about 122 km from Foggia.

[Edit] History [edit] originiDue ecclesiastical historians, Pompey and M. Sarno Knights in 1680 say that the origins of Fish go to Schiavoni traced or Slavs, called by Emperor Otto I to release the Gargano by the Saracens. The Sarnelli also specifies the year, 970. Both historians indicate Sueripolo the leader of this slave, in fact the Sarno writes, "Sueripolo, Captain of the Slavs, with his army Throw out all the Saracens from Monte Gargano victorious Slavs" were remunerated by the Emperor, making him habitare in the field of San Vito Gargano divide it into two colonies, one o'clock that Vico, the other Peschici.

The name of Fish is probably of Slavic origin, in fact, the Slavic root "PES" (or "fishing") refers to the sand, place names Slavic and Russian pjèskusa Pesko indicate sandy soil. Many were the Saracen raids on the coasts of Gargano dall'866 the 969 who went to finish in the tenth century. One thing is certain, Peschici was certainly inhabited in the eleventh century, and this is confirmed in a document, the Chartula Offertionis in S. Mary Forward to 1053, where it appears for the first time the name, and stating that three Slavs lived "... intus Castle Pesclizo ..."[ 2].

With the feudal system introduced by the Normans found in 1154, Peschici in the county of Hvar. In this period changed from a feudal lord to another. In 1177 it is under the fief of Monte Sant'Angelo, donated by William II the Good and his wife Joan of England. Under the rule of the Swabians, Peschici passed dramatic moments in the struggle between empire and papacy. A reporter of the time tells us that in September 1239, 25 Venetian galleys sent by Pope Gregory IX excommunicated Frederick II against the "bow down and take Bestic (Peschici) and Beasts (Vieste). Federico II, however, will rebuild the fortifications of the two centers. Under the Angevin dynasty, Peschici is among the few countries loyal to King Charles, at the time of arrival of Conrad of Swabia (1267). In 1274 took part in Bari, Monopoli, Trani, Apulia Vieste and Ortona in the fleet at the siege of Omis, a city of the Dalmatian coast. In 1401 the estate passed to King Ladislas of Durazzo.

[Edit] From the fifteenth century unification of ItaliaDurante the Aragonese government, supported the Gargano (1458) barons against the new King Alfonso, who in 1462 occupied the Gargano entrusted to Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg, an ally of the Spanish king. Against the background of this scenario is always present in Venice, the seaside town that controls all traffic to the East and the Adriatic coast: between 1469 and 1586 Peschici appears in 23 papers and pilot books, most of them written by geographers of the Serenissima. In addition, other documents attesting to build ships from Dubrovnik to Peschici between 1550 and 1570, "Antonio de Stephano de Ser Ser Marco Raguso et de Johanne make a ship building company in the range of 250 carats. Debia construction company in the future land Peschize. The dyspepsia will ducati 500 [3] "In Peschize de Gargano building a ship pro parte Johannis de Natale de Ragusa, Baroli commorantis. The Calefato is Marinus de Ragusa. [4] After the Franco-Spanish war for the possession of the kingdom of Naples, but especially after the umpteenth Turkish raids, which we have evidence in a manuscript by Timothy Mainardi (Grounds of the Monastery of St. Maria Tremiti, 1592), it is recalled in the 1554 massacre of Vieste, in which there were thousands of victims, and in 1567 the siege of Tremiti, it was decided to build ten towers along the coasts of captains.

Five years later the number increased to 21 towers and between them there are the Monte Pucci, said that customs officials in San Menaio and that of Calalunga, which was later demolished in 1570. The first description of Fish we in the Sarno 1676: "Land Baron. It is situated in a prominent, and enjoying the view of the sea. " Writes up area which is contained in the walls of fence outside the church of Our Lady of Loreto and Santa Maria di Sfilzi, convents Calena, S. Francis S. Nicholas. The drought and locust invasions, one of the applicants (1663) made many victims to decimate the population significantly.

In 700 a plaque on the fence Baron, in the center, confirming membership of the Prince of Peschici Ischitella Emmanuel Pinto. During the insurrection antiborbonca around the Gargano sales up, associations, coal, and in 1848 the peschici antiborbonico-liberal and active politician, poet and writer Joseph Libetta (known as commander of the first steam vessel that dared to cross the Mediterranean The Ferdinand I, who sailed from Naples 27 September 1818) entered the Parliament of Savoy was born in the Constitution. At the plebiscite of 1860, nearly 40% of Peschici voted in favor of the Bourbons.

[Edit] From the unification of Italy in the days nostriNel 1865, the isolation of the Gargano promontory is broken due to road construction circum Gargano, the current SS 89. During the Fascist period, the railroad arrived in 1931 and 1939 with the completion of the Aqueduct Pugliese. Despite the battles of the arrangements for the increasing population and grain production, Peschici the census of 1936 increased by one third but also the increase in emigration. Not better the situation after the war, in fact, with the increasing population is not growing jobs and living standards, but only the number of emigrants. Only with the advent of tourism around 1960 there will be improvements that will bring many visible fruits today.

[Edit] Monuments and places of interest [edit] torriFin history from the origins of Fish is deeply tied to the sea and its dangers. The village was founded, in fact, in the eleventh century by a handful of soldiers sent Slavs in the area by Otto I to deal with the menace of the Saracens. A memory of a centuries-old history of attacks and raids are now some coastal towers erected in the second half of the sixteenth century to defend the territory from pirates and privateers.

The forts are raised on high cliffs overlooking the sea, in a panoramic location with respect to the Adriatic: the location is strategic and functional and reporting the sighting of enemy ships. The towers are square and have the basic shape of a truncated pyramid, access occurred on the side facing the mountains by folding stairs in wood, later replaced by ramps fixed in masonry.

The slits, however, that also acted as windows were open on sides. Each tower would be visible from the other two towers: the warning of impending raids by day was by means of smoke signals at night by means of fire signals or by calling the sound of bells or horns. Sometimes they were even sent messengers on horseback to alert the local population.

Among the surviving towers is certainly the most famous Monte Pucci that offers its visitors a magnificent view. The tower, perched on the high limestone rock, wrapped dall'esaltante pine scent mixed with that of the myrtle, has lost its original crown and the other as the area has very small dimensions that attest to the function of sight, and thus not , defensive.
